Mental Health 101.

Plain-language answers to the questions you might've been afraid to ask.

What is mental health?

Mental health is how you think, feel, and handle life. It exists on a spectrum, just like physical health. Everyone has mental health — and everyone needs to care for it.

Stress vs Anxiety vs Depression

Stress = a response to a clear pressure. Anxiety = stress that lingers, often without an obvious cause. Depression = a sustained low mood, loss of interest, low energy lasting 2+ weeks.

Signs someone needs support

Withdrawing from people, sleeping too much or too little, irritability, hopelessness, giving away possessions, talking about being a burden.

How therapy works

Talk therapy is a confidential conversation with a trained professional. You set goals together. Sessions are usually 45–50 min, weekly. It's not advice — it's tools, perspective, and accountability.

Myths vs Facts

MYTH: Therapy is for 'crazy' people. FACT: Therapy is for everyone. MYTH: Black men don't need therapy. FACT: 1 in 4 Black adults has a treatable mental health condition. MYTH: It costs too much. FACT: Sliding scale and free options exist — Care Connections™ helps you find them.

Crisis warning signs

Talking about wanting to die. Looking for ways to harm self. Hopelessness. Rage. Reckless behavior. Withdrawing. If you see these — call 988 immediately.

Supporting a loved one

Don't fix. Listen. Ask: 'What do you need from me?' Validate: 'That sounds hard.' Stay close, even when they push away. You don't need to be a therapist to be a lifeline.
